I have to puppy DVD and he says he will give a puppy two sets of shot. If I remember correctly my DVD player is broken.
So does that mean that shadow will need another set or is one fine. IO really dont want to put him at risk in any way I cant handle loosing another puppy.
He gos everywhere in pet stores and everywhere else.
He is 1.5 pounds right now.
So I was just wondering.
Stephanie, it is impossible to know if he will develop immunity from the first set of shots. Puppies are protected for a limited time from the immunity that they get from their mother. It varies from dog to dog as to when that immunity wears off and when their own immune systems begin to kick in.
This is one reason why vets give so many series of shots to a young puppy; they do not know when the shots will be effective.
If you opt for no more vaccinations, then you may want to limit the pup's exposure to new dogs.
Perhaps someone else can comment on what the timeframe might be as to when the pup's immunity will be fully developed?

I whould check with the vet what the puppy is already vaccinated against. There are some breeders that go with the three-shot plan and some with two complex vaccines. The rabies vaccine is thought not to be effective, if it is given under 3 months of age so (at least here) pups usually get one set against all other diseases a bit under 2 months and then second with rabies added to the "coctail" at 3 months. Some breeders/owners delay until the pup is older, some do the "coctail" and rabies at different times so puppies system doesn´t have to take too much at one time. I am sure that the vet is not going to be very thrilled with the idea of you planning to skip the second set of shots but perhaps it will give an honest answer to the question if the puppy has enough immunity or is it questionable. I have been lucky enough not to have problems with either vaccines or going outside with not completely vaccinated puppies but a pup in parvo is not something to joke around about so if you decide not to, avoid places with alot of dogs until the pup is older.
I am considering cutting back on the vaccines my dogs get (well, only one is really mine but I decide stuff like that for the other two that live with us as well). But...
We have a law that obligates to yearly rabies vaccinations.
Also if you want to go to any canine events, the dog needs to have had his yearly canine disemper shot.
Not a problem in the summer but during indoor shows in the winter, there is ALOT of kennel cough going around so a taking a dog that is not had his vaccine (that they do TWICE!!!! a year- I have however taken only once) is quite risky.
I work at a dog shelter and there are pups and dogs with parvovirosis coming in almost regular basis so it must be pretty likely to pick that up as well.
I am trying to gather the courage to cut back on the shots I let them have but I am already scared out of my mind about the puppy I am planning to get.
My dobe and husbands dachshund are showing dogs that take (dachs is young so will be taking) part of trials and I trust them as healty adults not to get parvo but we still have two obligatory and one highly recommended shots.
Sisters collie mix has one that she must get according to law but she is a "show-mutt" so one should be added.
The puppy will need to have one by law plus one for wanting to show her plus one without what I don´t really dare to take her to walks (we had total of 22 deaths in the small 12 caged-15 doghoused pound this winter during the outbreak of parvo so I am scared brainless) plus one before the winter showing season is in...
Is there really a choice here? I feel as I might not want to research the subject any further to freak me out if I really have very little choice in reality....
Phoenix had four sets and the last set she had a bad reaction she was sick for 2 weeks she will never get another set of shots.
I have com to the desion of he will get one more set in 1 month that is it he will already be on heatguard as I live in texas and we may have 3 weeks without mosquitos in a year.
He is healthy And I go to pet co once in a blue moon I do go to my local mom and pop store to get everything I need.
Thanks for the help I relize it will be hard for me to show him but I am relizing he is not all the best to show anyway.
