I had a Rottweiler for a while, and our State Farm agent said it was fine. Wouldn't affect our policy unless our dog bit someone, then the rates could go up. Never had a problem. We haven't had that dog in about 5 years, but they don't know that we have a GSD now. If they didn't care about a Rottie, I'm not gonna bother to ask them about a GSD...State Farm is really reasonable
I think I recall years ago asking State Farm about our previous GSD and it was not a problem... but that's been some time ago. Also, if I'm not mistaken, renter's insurance is personal property only coverage. I don't think liability is included in those policies (that would be covered by the owner of the building or house).

Actually, Renters Insurance is usually written as a package and does provide the same comprehensive liability as is found on a policy for a homeowner. A renter should always carry liability insurance because they have just as many exposures. The owner of the unit carries what is called OL&T Insurance which covers his exposures as the landlord.
