I have a dog who has bad patella in both legs. Diagnosed grade two with leaning to 2.5 according to my vet on the OFA scale. In the last year I've noticed this progressively getting worse to the point I am considering having it surgically corrected. If he were a heavier dog I would have gotten it right off but as is this is a 4lb dog.
My hesitation is that I have seen some very botched results from patellar surgery make me wonder if I'm better leaving this lie rather than my dog be in constant severe pain which I've seen with two dogs, completely lame which I've seen with three dogs, and finally the problem creeping up again in two years which I've seen with a number of these cases.
Has anyone had this done before and had it work out well? Any advice about recovery time? Did you seek out an othopedic vet or did you let your local general vet do the work?

I've seen this surgery done very successfully. Full recovery time is, I believe, 2 months with the first 2 weeks being the most critical time. No jumping, no running, no stairs, and on-leash at all times. Sutures come out between 10-14 days.
I would strongly recommend having an ortho surgeon do this....or the very best board-certified surgeon you can find.
