Hello All!
We just returned from Day 1 of Roni Hoff's E-collar Training Seminar here in Las Vegas. Totally Awesome! We have learned SO MUCH today from Roni that our heads are still spinning. We started at 8 this morning and we didn't get out of there until after 7 this evening! So much to learn and absorb.
Roni is absolutely amazing! We feel that our dogs have learned so much in just this first day (and we definitely have learned even more than the dogs!). We had a very small group but everyone was very attentive to each dog that was being worked by Roni and then by its respective owner. After a while it started to look easy - but just wait - when your turn came, it was not so easy to get coordinated with your moves and what to do next and how to "read" your dog, etc.
Our two dogs were completely worn out on the drive home - I'm not sure if we can drag them out of their crates in the morning for the second day of the seminar. As for Steve and I, we are almost too excited from all we've learned to go to sleep tonight! We would sure like to thank Steve Kaplan and his wife Robbie for opening their home to this seminar, and also to Jim Wright who has almost completed his e-collar instructor training with Roni. It was a real pleasure to spend such quality time with those folks today!
We are back home after the second day of the Las Vegas E-Collar Training Seminar by Roni Hoff. Another fantastic day of training! This morning Roni spent a lot of time working with Nickie to overcome his fear of the pool. (He fell into our pool the first week we had him at the age of 8 weeks old). He will never get close to the edge and we just felt it was something we would have to live with. Well, Roni does not give up on any dog! She spent probably a half hour working with Nickie using a retreat-advance method (plus lots of raw hamburger bites). If you click on the Photobucket link below, you can see some pictures of her working with him and how close he got to the edge! Still a lot of work to do by us but who knows, maybe Nickie will be IN the pool by the end of the summer!
Another thing, Roni worked with our other dog Roxie who goes into a "red zone" case when she hears another dog on the other side of a block wall. Yesterday the situation did not come up, but this morning it did. We learned different methods of working through that situation - Roxie is not a dog who can't be fixed!
Then after lunch, we all went to a nearby park here in Las Vegas and worked our dogs with Roni's help (of course Steve Kaplan and his wife Robbie were there to help with the training along with the official cameraman, Jim Wright who is also learning Roni's training methods). I always had a problem with Nickie pulling badly even with the prong collar on when we would go for walks (he is a very powerful 75 lb bullmastiff/pitbull mix). Roni showed me what I was doing wrong. Then by using the e-collar with light stimulation along with Come, Heel, etc., we were soon walking with a loose lease!
It was truly an unforgetable weekend and has really changed the way we view our dogs. My husband is still on the phone calling his mom, sister, friends, etc. to tell them what we have been up to this weekend.
Be sure and click on the Photobucket link below and when the page opens, click on the left side of the screen the folder that says "Roni Hoff Seminar" to see about 15 pictures from today.
Anyway, we now have the necessary tools and knowledge to mold these two house dogs into our loving companions. As Roni would say, "It makes my heart smile."
Diane, thanks for the update on the seminar. It sounds like it was a real success.
I looked at the pictures and was surprised to see how small the e-collar was. What type of collar did you purchase?
Lynne,
We got the Dogtra 280NCP for both dogs. I just measured it - it is about 2 1/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches by 1 inch - yes it is very small but works so well! We also got the cinch collars (blue for Nickie and pink for Roxie). Jim Wright switched out the cinch collars for us - it is a very tight fit because they are not made for that purpose.
My husband and I could talk for hours on how exciting this e-collar training was for us and our dogs. We had a private lesson last night with Roni Hoff (Steve and Robbie Kaplan from Pet Pals of Las Vegas also came over to our house (they were the ones who sponsored the seminar). It was a very productive lesson!
Got to run off to work - will check back on the board throughout the day.
Diane
