I’ve been to many “Line of Duty” funerals in my 14 years on the job…. This was my first for a fallen K9. Please watch the video…. The link is at the end of the article. Rest in peace Ulf.. you are a true hero.
Memorial Service Held For Slain K-9 Officer
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Greater Pittsburgh's law enforcement community gathered this morning for a memorial services for a beloved K-9 police officer killed earlier this week in the line of duty.
Officers, trainers and other K-9 officers turned out to say goodbye to Ulf, a German Shepherd, who was shot and killed in Mount Oliver on Tuesday evening.
Today's memorial service was held at the Pittsburgh Police Training Academy on Washington Boulevard.
Officers who knew Ulf and his handler, Officer Christian Scuilli, spoke of the special bond the two had.
"Ulf was credited with apprehending several felonious suspects. His service to this department helped make the City of Pittsburgh safer," said Officer Brian Roberts, of the Pittsburgh Police. "Ulf gave the ultimate sacrifice and Ulf showed he was a loyal and dedicated officer to Christian."
Ulf would have turned 8-years-old on May 15. His remains will be cremated and his ashes will be turned over to his handler.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the shooting that claimed the life of both Ulf and the suspect, Justin Jackson, 19.
I was extremely touched and moved, as all who attended Ulf's funeral obviously were. I'd like to thank the Pittsburgh Police Department for treating Ulf as exactly what he was, a K9 Officer, partner, and acknowledging and honoring him in this way. I wish every Police Department would do the same for their K9 Officers. They deserve it.
To Officer Christian Scuilli, my heartfelt sympathies....and to all who were present at Ulf's funeral. It's so difficult to lose a dog you love.
Thank you for your service, Ulf. Well done good and faithful servant.
I've been to a K9 memorial once. It was one of ours and was every bit as emotional as a funeral for a fallen human officer. Condolences to the handler and his family.
This also truly moved me. The emotions on the officer's faces and the way their voices were breaking as they spoke was a true testament to what this dog accomplished, both in his the line of duty and in the hearts and lives of the officers he worked with.
"We owe it to them to be worthy of such devotion," was the quote that really stood out to me. I am so glad to have seen that video, Matt, and I echo Sandy in saying a heartfelt thank you to the Pittsburg PD for honoring him in such a wonderful and fitting way.
