Buck is now sixteen weeks old and weighs close to thirty pounds - an APBT. In Houston, now, the days are getting pretty warm - 90 degrees + and when I take him for a walk he spreads out on his stomach after about 1/3 of a mile and I almost have to drag him back to my truck.
At sixteen weeks how much exercise should I be able to put him through? And should I be using a prong collar?
And, as an aside, can anyone tell me the difference in a martingale leach and a dominant dog collar sold by Leerburg kennels? They look to my untrained ey as if they performed the same funtion.
Thanks for any advise you can share.
Jim
Short and easy answer? If he is pooping out after 1/3 of a mile, them walk a little less than 1/6 of a mile and head home.
Better answer, don’t be walking him in the heat of he day. His system and stamina are just not up to it. I won’t even walk my adults in that heat. He could very easily get heat stroke from that.
It reminds me of one of the product videos that Ed has on his site. One of their females gets heat stroke after chasing a ball four or so times. She probably would have gone for more, and didn’t know that her body couldn’t take it.
Take him for walks in the morning and evening and make them short enough that he never has to be dragged. Most pups will poop out when they are really over loaded. It tends to be in their nature to go beyond their body’s limits. It is you job to not to let him get there.
As for the collars, it has to do with thickness. Most martingale set ups that I have seen are MUCH thicker and are made for comfort. I love them for quick walks and have some in the car for emergencies (or when I have a blond moment and forget to bring one with us… )
DD collars are thin and made for a very specific purpose. They are not for general walking or an every day collar. They are for dominant dogs (and you really need to know how to use them) and for an emergency back up to a prong (and when they kick in for that, it really is an emergency! )
And I really don’t think you need a prong yet. You gave no indications for the use that you think it necessary . Certainly not a pooped out pup that needs to be dragged, or a sixteen week old pup for any reason that I can think of.
