do you wait until your dog is older? young adult? is there any harm in giving small doses to young puppies(like 8 weeks)? what about just giving once or twice a week for younger dogs(like a year, 2 years old).....
none of my dogs (minus sonny for about 2 months) have needed this, but i am starting biking bart and roxie, maybe capone, and i didn't know.

I *think* I've read a post here that stated there are no studies that show giving joint supplements to healthy puppies or young adults prevent future problems.
With that said, I know there are plenty of people who do begin giving it at a young age, with no apparent side effects. I've never read anything that said it would be harmful.

So far, that is correct.
Anyway, the way glucosamine (and the glucosamine family) works, it's hard to imagine a mechanism by which it could benefit healthy whole joints.
But if new info comes out, I'll post it! (Or if anyone else sees anything, please do the same.)
I just purchased a bottle of it with my last LB order. I thought I'd give it a try as my dog is pretty active. (She's approaching 3 years old, no dysplasia.) It sounded like it would provide some benefit or protection for healthy joints?
I'd welcome any links to studies/info. on supplementing for joint health.
However, as Sarah said, I too know lots of people who give it pretty young in the minimum dose, and I can't imagine any possible ill effects.
What I do is start it around age 5 or 6 or if/when any joint problems are seen (at any age). I always assume that the actual joint wear is going to begin before symptoms do, so joint support should start at the earliest age that dogs seem to be affected, depending on your breed, size, etc.
IOW, I'd have no problem using it. I would use the lowest dose at that age.
