After 2 years of peaceful co-existance, my dog has started snapping at one of my cats.
True was raised from Day One to leave the cats alone. He has always been gentle and friendly with them.
Lately, however, he's jumping and snapping at one of them...the one who is a little more passive and who does not warn him off if he approaches. This cat is also somewhat "off", very slightly brain damaged, and is kind of erratic in her movements and behavior.
I don't get the feeling he's trying to kill her or even to harm her. He'll do this when she's wound up and running around but he'll also do it when she's quiet and he's all wound up. And this doesn't happen all the time. It's infrequent. But whatever the reason, it's unacceptable. Even without intent to harm, he could still seriously injure her.
Clearly, we've done something wrong or have missed the signs that led to this. Any suggestions what we should do to stop this behavior?
Correct off the cat/redirect to appropriate item Unless he retrieves cats it shouldn't affect any other behavior or drive if you redirect properly.
I'd go back to basics and keep a drag line or leash on him in the house so as to best and most effectively control and correct the behavior towards the cat.
One thing is not to try for a happy medium. What I mean is that a lot of people get into trouble with their dog(s) and cat(s) when the dog/cat have been good and will play nicely. Playing, even if it is "nice" play, tends to be the stepping stone from nice and easy to not so nice and definitely not easy. The rules tend to need to be either no play, or live with the eternal fued and worry of a large dog hurting a cat.
There are cats that are great with dogs, and there are dogs that are great with cats. The trick is having both in the same household, it tends not to happen very often!
I don't allow my dogs to play with the cats and I keep my cats away from the dogs because my cats are jerks
