Hi, Barbara,
Not sure I'm up to another Abady thread. JK.
But the subject line is largely correct.
We talk a lot here about the practice (bad) of basing dog foods on grain (a plant product). A large part of the reason is the dog's lack of the amounts of such enzymes as salivary amylase that are needed to process grain-heavy foods.
Produce with stiff cell walls (cellulose) are similarly unusable to the dog.
This is why you see that raw feeders process produce to closely replicate the contents of small prey (which canids eat in its entirety, of course; they don't leave teeny rabbit and bird stomachs in a trail behind them as they feed) and the very tender ripe fallen produce that they eat (gray wolves, for example, with berries and young ferns that grow by water).
Owners who feed raw carrots will see the raw carrot come out the way it went in.
Processed produce in small amounts is what we aim for.
Even better is green tripe: produce "on the hoof."
I did find another thread on Abady after I posted. It didn't speak of the "plant matter" though so I guess I am safe. I was thinking it was implying more of the greens, but yet it uses grain even though not a lot. The statement just seemed a little "out there" to me.
I was at the pet supply store this morning and I did buy the Abady for my cat and THK for my dogs.

Well, a broccoli stem, for example, is indeed pretty much unusable by the dog's system. The stiff cell walls require enzymes that we have but dogs do not (not in the quantity needed).
If the food contains grains, then "plant matter is indigestible to dogs" says something about what the company says versus what it does.
Do you use the THK with RMBs? That would be a good diet, IMHO.
Yes, I am progressing to THK in the am and RMB in the pm. I did also buy some Orijen to try with Reba(GoldenDoodle) that is very picky. She has hated the two varieties of THK I tried before, I bought the Embark this time and will try that with her and Justice. I was feeding Blue "Wilderness' as a kibble, in the am, Reba would eat that. I am trying to upgrade her food. She has a very fast metabolism besides being picky so I will leave her food out for her for a longer time than I do Justice. I don't feed in the crate but individually in a small room that is the dogs.
I posted elsewhere that I think Justice has downed pasterns so I am going to try THK also to see if that doesn't help, along with keeping to the RMB in the pm. I am also solely keeping her on grass for the moment and just exercising her in the yard. I do miss our walks but want to do what I can for her feet. I am not sure how long it will take before I can expect to see an improvement with her pasterns. I want to do the best for her that I can.
