i have a friend that is considering raw for her older dog, but he has had a throat operation recently, and he can't have any foods that would "irritate" his throat, like small bites kibble for example....
she is concerned about bones because of this(she wouldn't be concerned with this in an otherwise healthy dog).
what do all you recommend?
about the bone aspect i mean, nothing else seems to be a problem
she's not sure if he'll ever be able to bones....of course, ground bones, etc could be provided, but what about their teeth? ground everything and greenies? not good.....
How old is the dog? What do the dogs teeth look like now?
BIG pieces of meat that the dog has to work on would help. BIG pieces of tripe are very tough and would provide alot of dental benefit. Meat that still has the hide and hair attached would make the dog gnaw more, thus providing more brushing action.
Those would help to do alot of the work that the ground bones would not be doing.
My GSDs both eat only ground RMBs, except for special treats. One has EPI and doesn't digest bones well when they aren't ground. They also stay at my mother's while I work and she feeds them...she doesn't like feeding whole RMBs. They both are in excellent health and have clean white teeth. You might want to check out Oma's Pride products for your friend - they have some great stuff and it is ground really fine. She could also give some recreational bones that would help clean his teeth, but not be "swallowable".
