We have a black lab that is 9months old. He is really a good dog. He is not hyper, he seems to be really smart, and he is really lovable. However, he likes to eat (totally swallow) clothes. He does not chew on them, so we can not catch him. He must do it quite fast because I have only caught him with clothes in his mouth a few times. He loves to swallow socks and underwear. He truly is a miracle dog, he has swallowed so many things and they pass through either by throwing up or coming out the other end. We are very lucky that none of these clothes have been caught up in his insides and have killed him. WHY does he do this and HOW do we stop him from doing this????? He finds these clothes anywhere, in a clean clothes basket, etc. PLEASE help us. THANKS!!!!!!!!
A) Stop leaving him out of your site
B) Don't leave clothes where he can get to them
C) (my favorite) Stop wearing clothes all together
Ok, since I realize that C isn't practical, you are the one at fault here. Do not let him out of your sight. If you can't watch him, crate him. Buy a clothes hamper and use it! Don't leave the laundry basket on the floor.
You have been very lucky so far that he has been able to pass his finds. One day he is gonna eat the wrong pair of undies and you are going to have a large vet bill.
Deanna,
I agree 100% with all your suggestions but......
remember that as men, we can not even *identify* a clothes hamper, much less own one!
Hey now, I gotta reply. We have 4 clothes hampers in our house and 4 clothes baskets. It's not a matter of our clothes lying around. The dog goes into the clothes baskets. However, my kids are not as tidy as I would like and I think that is basically the main problem. It's KID training that I gotta keep working on. But as we know KID training is going to last my whole life, I would think. Thanks for the responses anyways. I just thought there might have been a way to deter the dog from the desire to swallow clothes. Guess not.
