Well, it's been quite a while since I posted last. However I have a question I am battling. I am considering getting another dog to go along with my very hyper, very active german shorthair pointer. She is now about 9 months old.
I would like to get her a buddy to help keep her occupied during the day while I am at work. She is dying to play with another dog and i am wondering if this is a good idea.
The dog I am considering is a 4.5 year old german shepherd/lab mix. He is very calm, semi-trained, and just a little heavy.
My biggest question is...is this a good idea? Is a 4.5 year old dog a bit too old for my young hyper dog? Will the presence of an older, more tame and calm dog possibly help calm her down if not at a minimum give her a buddy to spend time with during the day?

I'm wondering if a calm (lower-drive?) dog might not find a high-drive puppy annoying as hell, particularly if they're left alone together all day.
I'd also worry that if the older dog got fed up you might come home to the scene of a dog fight and an injured dog.
How about having a dog walker/trusted neighbor/friend come in to exercise your pup for an hour or so, every day or at least a few times a week? Might help her blow off some of that energy.

I have a 7 month old Vizsla pup who is extremely hyper and a 10 month old GSD pup who is extremely mellow and they get along great. They basically grew up together so I'm not sure how the dynamic would work with an adult dog who most likely would find a hyper pup annoying. I would not leave these dogs alone together for a few weeks at least until you are absolutely sure that the older dog will tolerate the pup. If you can attempt to work this out on a trial basis it may be worth it. I have an elderly Weimaraner (11 1/2 years old) who also tolerates the pups and the pups leave him alone.
