I've got a Malinois pup and will be E-Collar training him. I've trained my previous boxers with e-collars. I need a new collar and I'm just wondering what people recommend more, Dogtra or Tri Tronics and which model is best for a Malinois. Thank you!

I LOVE my Dogtra 1700. I also really like my Tri-Tronics except for the receivers since they are rather large and difficult to carry and manage while training or on a real mission.
I think they are both good products, but the Dogtra wins out due to the digital read outs and variety of stim-levels.
I do not agree, however, with using an e-collar on a pup. Positive, fun (the pup finds the handler WAY more fun than anything else), and short (gradually increasing as the pup gains more focus) motivational training sessions are what I use with pups all the way to puberty.
Doesn't matter which brand for a specific breed, just handler preference in my opinion.

I'd go with the Tri-Tronics Pro 500 if you're going to be doing Schutzhund or Ringsport. In my experience the Dogtra has a slight delay between when the button is pushed and the stim is delivered to the dog. That delay, coupled with the quickness of my Malinois, pretty much ruled out using the Dogtra.

That is a really interesting point John.
I have never had an issue with what you mention at all. And, just now testing it out (on low stim of course ) , it did not seem like there was a delay with either of my collars.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I have a Dogtra and there's no delay on mine. I just started using it on my pup, who's 7 1/2 months now. Our other dog, who is a bit soft (who knew how soft til the next one came along) reacts well when it's set at 50. But the puppy acts like she doesn't even have it on at 50! We set it to 80 for her.
The only thing I'll say about the Dogtra is that the "constant" button, even if you just touch it is waaaaaay too much for them unless you cut the number in about half. I have Ed's video and only use the nick, but once I accidentally touched the constant, and the dog yelped and flipped in a circle like she was being murdered. (On 50 she just flinches a bit as if to get an irritating fly off her).
Anyway, I only have a Dogtra so I don't know why I'm blathering on this thread....lol

I should add that I tested them on myself, NOT the dogs.
Didn't want anyone to think that I used the e-collar on the dogs for no reason.....

Carol & Charles,
Again, just my experience & that of my training coach Armin Winkler. I'm not going to speak for Armin, but this was the issue we ran into, I think it was a Dogtra 1200. The other issue was similar to what Charles mentioned...the 100 setting on the Dogtra, on multiple occasions, would not even elicit a response from my dog during the revier. OTOH, we used a 3 Medium or High on the TT and got results.

William;
I prefer the Dogtra over the TT. I need the collar is raise and lower in intensity in small increments. The level of stimulation
in the TT jumps too much from one level to another.
********Just a little side note here; I really want to caution people to make sure that the collar is fit snuggly on the dogs neck and the points are actually touching the skin. The collar will "seem" to work intermittantly if the collar is not positioned properly.****************

William; Thru my experience, I have found that the drive that the dog is in and the level of that drive, is what determines the necessary level for an e-collar. The size of the dog doesn't
matter either.

Hi Charles:
your settings make me wonder if the collar is on tight enough. With my Dogtra 1702 I set it at 25 for my soft female Beauceron (up to 40 to bring her back when she went for a moose) and 35 for my harder, more stoic cattle dog. All on nick.
