there's a big recall up here b/c a number of prepared meat products have been linked to a listeria outbreak, people are sick and a couple have died.
i have some hot dogs i got to dehydrate for treats for the dogs, by a brand affected by the recall, but the hot dogs aren't on the recall list. i also have some raw turkey (not processed) from the main processor responsible for the outbreak.
i'm a bit nervous to feed it.
is that reasonable? i did some googling, and found that bravo (which apparently makes raw dog food) recalled food last year due to salmonella and listeria concerns.
on the other hand, the dogs are probably exposed to organisms as a result of being fed raw - my understanding is a healthy dog is able to handle exposure jut fine.
am i off in my understanding? safe to feed? or probably just easiest to get some new stuff period?
I honestly don't know.
I know that *some* dogs *can* get meningitis from listeria.
But I don't honestly know.
If you COOK the food thorougly, you kill the listeria, but then, would you want to feed it to the dog, cooked?
I feel your pain, having just spent the night at the E-vets with a sick puppy.
I think for your own peace of mind, you shouldn't feed it raw. Either cook it and mix the cooked bits in with something else, or just toss it. Better than worrying about every time the dog does something strange, thinking it was the listeria.
yeah, i'm leaning to tossing it, even though nothing i have is on the recall list. especially if meningitis is a possible....just not worth it. i bought it all from grocery gateway and i have no idea how to return it....maybe i'll email and ask. cause i bought A LOT of hot dogs, darnit!
