Hi everyone, I used to post as Keleah Schmaltz, but I got married and changed my user name and last name.
ANYWAY. I have 2 dogs as of right now, a GSD(Shaed) and a choc. lab(Otto)-adding one more GSD in the near future.
We had blood tests done on our lab because he has been losing hair on his belly and it's gotten thin on his sides. Also has become brittle feeling-not normal. He and our GSD are on Innova EVO for their diet. We will be switching them back to raw shortly now that things have settled down in our life-had a baby and moved into a new house.
Had thought at first that maybe the hair loss was due to stress and hormones-not neutered and now need to wait to neuter until stablized on meds. My lab now has to take .6mg of Thyrosyn twice a day for about 5-6weeks then back to the vet to check how he's doing-if his thyroid is regulated.
I was wondering if anyone else here has any experience with this and if anyone knows any side effects that I should look for. The vet didn't really say much about side effects, except to watch him and bring him back before his meds are gone. Any help and input would be greatly appreciated!
my old dog had hypothyroidism. once they're on the meds--correct dose--you'll be fine. and so will he. this is (usually) a simple fix, for both dogs and people. good luck! it should be ok.
The meds usually do the trick very nicely.
The only other thing I can think to mention is to closely monitor his diet, and make sure he gets adequate exercise, because his metabolism will be considerably slower now.
Forgot to mention, my lab is going to be 2 next month and 80lbs(hasn't gained or lost any weight-yet). And between now and when the hair loss started nothing has changed with his diet or exercise, for the exception that there's a new baby in the house.
Thanks for the input Ann and Alyssa! I appreciate it.
My mom has Hypothyroidism too and she takes meds every day and she feels good to but it wasn't until after they figured out the proper dosage for her. That's my only worry that Otto could have some kind of reaction with the dose he's on. But I am very hopeful and know he'll be fine. Thanks
