Hope I can come in here. I wanted to know if any of you have ever fed your dog rabbit (with bones) or llama or ostrich bones.
My dogs eat the bones in the chicken, but I wondered what these other bones were like in terms of hardness. I have terriors and wonder if they will be able to handle those bones. I have heard lamb bones are softer, but what about rabbit and the rest?
Thanks
I've fed all 3 (rabbit, llama and ostrich) to my dogs and haven't had any problems.
If you're worried about tooth damage, you can avoid feeding the harder weight-bearing bones, such as legs, from larger prey. Rabbit bones should be fine... unless maybe it's an enormous, well exercised rabbit being fed to an extremely tiny dog
Some dogs crunch down so hard on the big leg bones that they can chip and break teeth so it's always a good idea to keep an eye on them to prevent this.
If a big leg bone is very meaty, I'll let my dogs have it. Once they've finished ripping off the meat and I see that they're trying to crack open the bone, I'll take it away to prevent tooth damage.
I'm also careful about feeding jaws from larger prey... they're also extremely hard bones and can be just as damaging to a dog's teeth as the big leg bones.
If you're feeding ribs, necks, backs and other softer non weight-bearing bones, you shouldn't have any problems no matter what size prey they're from.
So far I've had two of my guys chip a couple of teeth on bones (minor chipping) - one dog on deer leg bones, the other on a sheep jaw bone.
Now I take away the leg & jaw bones as soon as I see the dogs crunching down on them (as opposed to ripping meat off of them) and I haven't had problems since
PS: two of my pups were raised on raw and were easily eating whole rabbits at 7-8 weeks of age.
Dear Yuko:
My dogs are terriors, the largest one weights about 13 lbs. the smallest we just got, she I believe is underweight (her hip bones stick way out) All of my dogs did not start out on raw, their rescue agencies fed kibble. So it has been this last year that I have had them that they have eaten raw. They love it.
Thank you for your answer. I didn't want to order bones my dogs couldn't handle and waste money, so I was grateful for your response.
Your dogs are beautiful! I love big dogs!! I am going to try and get pictures of my pups on line too, but I am not too computer savy.
May God bless you.
Sharon, it's great that you switched your rescues to raw.
If they are the type that chew and gnaw gently on bones, then large prey leg bones may be fine for them.
What type of bones were you looking to order? Marrow bones or the softer edible bones (such as ribs and vertebrae)?
Anyway, thank you!
If you'd like any help getting pictures up, feel free to PM me. I can even help out with editing pics and so on... I'd like to see your dogs too
