I just received a letter from AKC wanting to see if I had any dogs that weren't able to be registered in the past. If so I could register them now with no late fees involved.
What is kind of funny about the whole thing is how they have rules to get DNA on your stud dogs and keeping such accurate breeding records and your dogs microchipped, tagged, or tattooed to protect the registry, but, they will register a dog that hasn't been registered as a puppy.
I wonder if someone can breed a female with an unregistered male and then use another shepherds name to register the pups? It seems like this would be possible,
I think it's a little scary....Did others receive this letter?
When you say "weren't able to be registered" is that because someone didn't get it done but still has records or because there is no traceable lineage to back up the dog?
Are they going to require DNA testing for the prolific studs as before? Will all the ancestors have to be registered before the current generation can be registered??
I think this is a move to regain the revenue lost by people going to other registries that accept AKC pedigreed dogs.
I really have no idea what they really mean, All my dogs are registered, and since I have been so busy this week, haven't really studied it good. I will tomorrow though and see if I can figure out exactly what they mean.
Melissa: I don't have a scanner. I will look at it better and let you know more in detail what it says. I don't work tomorrow, so that is when I will have time to do it.
I was reading over the letter from AKC. They enclosed a flyer with the letter and it said :
For them to determine the AKC registration eligibility, staff will request a copy of parentage documentation, such as a registration certificate or pedigree from another regtistry or a bill of sale.
AKC will register the dog with the current registration fee and an additional 10.00 research fee. All late fees will be waived.

It is so that people who purchased puppies who had their papers withheld (so they wouldn't be bred, for example) can now register (and thus breed) their dogs. AKC is doing this to get around the reputable breeders and make more money.
Plus, the previously unregistrable faulty dog's puppies can now be registered as well, making AKC even MORE money.
