Like I mentioned in another topic....I'm getting a Working Line GSD pup this week and have two - 13.5yr old beagles who stay outside in the back yard 24/7. The new pup will stay inside the house with me mostly, in particular now in his early puppyhood. Possibly to a kennel or both as he matures.
Let me say first that I am not an expert dog handler and my experience is limited to having just a few dogs as house pets. Someone told me that the older dogs are going to take this to heart and it'll probably kill them since they are so old. I can see how they may feel upset that they don't get A/C and the new guy does. Can anyone shed some light on the situation and is there a way for me to alleviate this stress placed on the older pooches, certainly my intention is not kill them or to make them feel bad.
My first guess is that it can be solved via "Give pack leader respect where pack leader respect is due", however when the pup gets special priviledges that the older ones don't like going inside or staying inside the house, I'm guessing that may raise some issues.
But to be honest I don't think that they would like being inside the house. They kinda have their own rituals as far as different spots in the yard at different times of the day which is something that they never really had until a few years ago. I think they really like doing whatever they want when they want in the back yard.
Giving them more personal and special attention is my guess that it would make them feel ok with the new pup and not left out, rather they get more attention since the pup has arrived(would that be considered some kind of marker training) Is that right or is there another solution? Am I missing something?
