Dante finally had his bilateral entropion surgery. He's home with the Plastic Cone O' Doom around his head. He'll need the protection of a cone for at least two weeks until the stitches get removed and I'd like to get a softer collar. If it'll work.
Has anyone tried more of a flat ring protective collar like this? It looks to me like a front paw can get around it to swipe a healing eye. Anyone try this style with success for front/head protection?

The problem with the other stiff collar options is that they're not quite as effective as the cone of solitude all the time. You have to keep them on as tight as you can. They don't always work well with a determined flexable long nosed dog.
Really the cone is a good thing. There is a reason vets have used it so long.
Just a suggestion… especially if you have a determined, high energy dog. Run some duct tape around the edges and fold it over so that it covers a bit of both sides. We went through 12 of the “cones of solitude” (Thanks Melissa, made me laugh) during my boy’s aural hematoma recovery. He would bash them off of everything until they would start to split.
That dang plastic cone was tearing the place up - hitting furniture, walls, flesh. We could've lived with it for another 2 weeks (the stitches come out then) but I ended up buying a product called a Comfy Cone. One of the BEST investments, I think. It extends just to the point of his nose. He's already brought a paw up over his head to try to slide down over his eye and the Comfy Cone protected him completely. What's cool is that it's very flexible and you can roll it back temporarily for eating, etc. He's even using it as a pillow for sleeping. I highly recommend this thing.
