i would like to get this dog to wellness ,raw diet, suppliments, hopefully he will make it through treatment ok,i am not sure what stage of heartworm he has,but my heart really went out for this poor old guy.i know i just cant give him a bowl of raw right off the bat.but it kills me to feed him science diet.i will keep you posted

Why would he have to have Science Diet?
P.S. I applaud you. If there is any way I can encourage you in this enterprise, let me know. The town where I live was fortunate enough to be able to take in more than a hundred Katrina animals, and I still think about how great it was to get the HW-positive dogs treated, cared for, and back to health. One older GSD's photo is on my desk. He is healthy and happy, and still carrying around the old toy football that he left New Orleans with and kept with him through all his many changes.

thanks connie, encouring story. i cant wait to get him,the shelter feeds science diet,i have to do to slow switch,1 week i guess,i will get a bag of orijen and do some raw ,then if we keep him, which i am sure if he makes it we will.,all raw.i think the guy is around 6 years, but thats what shelter says,he will be off to dr.becker soon enough,on his way to wellness.i read that injection site for heartworm treatment is very painful,i cant wait to bath him and brush.it wont take long before he is fattened up and shiney.
just cant go for walks and play with jake for awhile.
this is a 1st for me,really excited and happy my husband with the big NO WAY went for it.do you think a good kibble or thk would be better for a start?
About the food: This is a debilitating, exhausting disease. My own preference would be to give the best food possible to the recovering dog -- and of the commercial options, that would probably be THK with real meat added in per the instructions on the bucket. This is strictly MHO. I'd get Force for the dog (who will be unable to exercise and burn many calories) and, depending on the dog's weight, I'd add the appropriate real meat. Even a dog suspicious of this new texture is going to like it when it's the "gravy" surrounding real meat.
