I bought a AKC male gsd born may 31st 03 he is picking up on most things when playing with his toy he will only do it for about 15 minutes then it's over he does't get to play with this toy only when working it seems hard to get him really exited and want it bad when using ball on string he seems to do ok but retriving and searching for the toy is hard to get him to search the area im trying to show him any ideas? I trained my old dog a blue healer for drug and search and rescue with some help of several k-9 friends and had more drive than this dog I'm worried but under stand this may be to early for all this also the ears are sorta up kinda like at a 45 degree angle his brothers ears are straight up and stay there mine will put them back when i'm out with him but not all the time is this a problem to? I have never beat him so this makes me wonder any help is great thanks alex peterson.
Fifteen minutes is a LONG time for a 4 mos old to focus on anything. To build his interest in the toy, play intensely for only a couple minutes - literally only 3-4 minutes. Make the toy disappear without taking it away from him (steal it and hide it), darn, shucks, game over. Do this several times a day, always quitting while the pup is the most intense and having the most fun, and you'll see his interest grow and grow. BTW, if you've found a toy the dog prefers to a ball on the string, don't hesitate to use it. The dog tells us what he finds rewarding. And don't worry about the ears - they often come down while they're teething. BTW, don't do a lot of pulling/tugging while he's teething. Some pups find this painful and they associate it directly with the game.
Thank you for the reply that is what I thought though I'm no expert and will never be the thing that I still wonder about is the ears coming down when I'm around and playing they are usually up when he is out on his own in the yard then when I go out to play they go back I mean straight back is this a good thing or bad I'm trying to get a dog that is not to afraid of most things around the house and neighborhood I don't want a dog that will atack but one that will say this is my place and you need to leave. thanks again for any info.
