Hi, I am going to be getting a new gsd pup in the next couple of weeks. my question is, i have a 4 month old kitten and i have a feeling the pup is going to want to eat him. any tips on keeping the kitten alive?
he (the kitten) is pretty small, about 3 pounds, and is fearless around the dogs. his favorite game is to have my other shepherd trot along behind him while he runs around, he bounces and goes crazy. he'll run right up to the dogs and pounce on their heads and everything, it's really funny. i know most cats will swat at a dog that is frightening them, but he doesn't get scared and never swats (which will deter a pup), he just takes off, bouncing around. do you think the kitten will be safe? should i keep them separate for a while or introduce them after she's home for a couple of days?
i've had pups before, but never with a cat, and i know this one is going to have some crazy prey drive!
Great article! One thing to remember. Having YOUR dog adjust to YOUR cat doesn't mean they will get along or be safe with other dogs or cats. My hunting terriers are quite safe with my hunting partners cats but I have to watch them very carefully around strange cats when we are barn hunting.

How true OED, and I find it funny that now Bella lives in a house that also has cats, yet she NEVER chases those cats. The ones she grew up with will be traumatized forever!! LOL
Too bad I didn't know about this site until just AFTER I took her home!
BTW, I'm getting a kitten this weekend! Now, to introduce Nero to his new housemate! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
