At what age is it best recommended to start puppy off to swim: nothing extradinarily long, maybe a few minutes at a time, so that he builds muscles, and does not put extra straing on hips and joints
I had my pup in an indoor pool at the age of 14 wks. She LOVES it!!!! I actually had the opportunity to put 3 of the siblings in the pool as well and they all did very well.
Now, you can't get Tikka out of the pool or lake!! She is a great swimmer (so are both parents) and I don't worry so much about her at the lake when she takes off swimming.
The sooner the better! Swimming is much better on their joints due to the low impact and great for muscle building. Introduce him to water by getting a toy (one that floats!) and toss it on the waters edge. Concentrate on play and slowly increase the distance into the water, soon you'll be swimming!
Just limit the amount of exercise as you would with any pup, do not work him to the point of exhaustion. For our gang, water is as natural as the land, whether it be jumping off the back of boats, docks or running in the sea!
And ALWAYS ALWAYS teach your pup how to get to the stairs and out of the pool first!! All of my dogs have fallen into the pool accidentally, luckily the first thing I taught each of them is where the stairs are. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
