When the helper cracks the whip the first time what should we expect from the dog. If it barks right away does that make it a sharp dog? If it doesnt does it mean that it has good nerves? What would be a good reaction from a dog the first time it sees a helper crack a whip??
Personally I want to see the dog step up the intensity with the whip. Some dogs take a few sessions before they start reacting to it, others have a natural reaction to it immediately.
That said, the reaction I like to the whip is a reason to not use it often. A whip-reactive dog may become hectic if the whip is used too much.
I like let my pup watch other dogs working with the stick and whip.
It lets the dog see how other dogs react to the objects.
Danke has learnt in a very short time that being civil towards the helper is not only allowed, but encouraged (she loves to bark at the helper now... and loves even more to eye-f*** him while on the sleeve); all as a result of watching the other dogs do it.
Mike is on point with his post, be careful with over usage of the whip during the development of your dog, as many grips have been screwed up as a result....hecticness leads to a shitty grip. Another thing, make sure your helper looks at the dogs eyes when you use the whip, the ones that are sensitive flinch once you reach a certain distance. As the handler, you won't be able to see that and have to depend on the helper to read your dog.
