The vet's digestive enzyme product had "animal digest" as an ingredient. It was different than their probiotic product. The vet said "you could use this, or this".. meaning I had a choice. I already had organic kefir at home, so I went that route.
I guess the vet meant that although different products, they would accomplish the same goal.
I don't have any experience with digestive enzymes, but they're not really the same thing as probiotics.
they are both output products of "fermentation product" of probiotic strains.
What ?
Look at the ingredient lists on probiotics. Most of them say "{bacteria name} fermentation product" This means they take the whole bacteria culture and dry it out. They don't remove the bacteria from the food medium they were growing in, and the enzymes they excreted to digest that food. Many of the "enzyme" products also have the same ingredient, they're just not cold stored after manufacture.
Personally, I think the enzymes do more good than the bacteria. I use a product that marketed as an enzyme and is not cold stored, and I get the same results I do with higher quality refridgerated probiotics from the health food store.
After his fast yesterday and his supper of boiled rice and chicken and 3 tablespoons of Kefir, my young man made a wonderful poop this morning! It was very firm (even firmer than his usual ones).
I fed him boiled rice and chicken and kefir again this morning.
OK Connie.... we had one great poo!... what are the next steps?
