I have a new pup 10wks, although not a shepherd he does have pretty good prey drive, exhibits many of the behaviors people speak of here in their high prey drive pups. He runs at me biting and chomping, loves tug and to chase things on a string. He is always taking flying leaps at our other siberian grabbing his tail and at his face, behaviours our previous shepherd would exhibit.
I have Bernhard Flink's video on building drive and focus and it is going well, but he is so young, would these same drills be okay with a 10 week old?
Also how would you use the prey drive to train a dog to come, sit, down? He knows sit and down, but do I allow him to have the toy each time and when do I take it away? When playing tug should I let him win? and after how long?
I just want to add, everyone has been so helpful with all my questions and I just have to say my 14month old siberian with low drives has been the star of the show at his advanced obediance class.
Julia,
At 10 weeks old, Bernhard would only be doing play/prey drive building with the ball on a string, and trying to get a few seconds of focus out of the dog before it was rewarded.
10 weeks old is a baby. Give him a bit of time to grow, OK? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
