While playing with tug with my pup his front left k-9/fang broke in half, horizontally. he does not appear to be in any pain & is eating normally. So, I don’t know if I should take him to the vet, because I know they will try & ring out every last dollar that I have for all kinds of tests. btw: he is 4mo & 1 wk old & he had just started teething a week ago, just his incisors. I tried to not play tug with him because of this but he wanted to play & very bad (kept bringing me all his tug toys) so I did but was careful. except for this time. Note: he had a hold of the rope tug with his molars & it slipped & I think got caught on his front fang causing it to break off, at least that is what I think happened. should I bring him to the vet or should I just let it go as he would loose that tooth anyway since it is a puppy tooth. the fangs are replaced, please say yes!
thanks
Nick

Your pup should be fine. He will grow adult K9 teeth anyway. A word of caution however, you should really lay off the tug a war games during teething. Puppies have soft sensitive mouths, and you don't want them to associate pain with biting if you are doing proetection training later. I just got one of Ed's tapes on bite training puppies, and he suggests using a tie out for a teething pup and just doing a lot of teasing and agitation with the dog, but never giving him a bite. This can go on for a couple of weeks and will bring the drive of your dog for the prey item way up. Good luck.

Thanks for the advivice guys!
John, I understant i should not play tug with him for now (& i wont after this) but should i still let him have access to his toys to chew on his own? Im assuming yes, so he can relive some of the teething pain.
& i will try the teasing thing while he is tied out.
Thaks again,
Nick

My opinion is to allow him to have his chew toy's or rawhides to gnaw on. I don't think it will hurt anything. Just lay off playing tug with his toy's until his adult teeth come in. If you see bleeding in his mouth or on blood on the toy's you've given him, you might want to find something softer for him to chew on.

This happened to both front canines on my male at 4-5 months old. As I had recently had to cap a canine on an adult tooth on my female, I was a bit paranoid, and contacted the same vet dentist who told me to just keep an eye on the incoming canine and make sure the solidly seated fragmented canine did not make the adult tooth displace. We actually did do very light, restrained rag work with this puppy during teething as he could care less about the teething and it helped loosen this fragmented tooth which was a good thing in this instance. Don't normally do anything with them during teething, but did with him for the express purpose of making sure that fragment came out!

Try giving your dog some ice cubes too. This seems to help numb some of the pain young pups experience during teething. At best it's good for some temporary relief.

Here is what i do. Take a clean sock and soak it with water, then ring the majority of the water out using both hands turning in opposite directions which will leave the sock all twisted up from the way you rung out the water. Then take the sock and place it in the freezer and let it freeze. After frozen give it to your pup, it acts like a hard bone/tug at first when frozen and he will learn the more he chews the softer it gets as it thaws out, which is pleasurable to his teeth.
