Truman has an appointment at the vet today for his yearly exam. I was planning on only vaccinating him for the state required 3 year rabies. After speaking with a friend this morning I am now wondering if I should have him vaccinated for Lepto also. My friend works in a vet clinic, and she has seen 3 cases of Lepto last year. One was in a puppy, and the other 2 were in Adult dogs. One of the dogs had been vaccinated and the other had not been. Two of the dogs died, and one ended up wwith severe kidney damage.
Truman and I frequently go for hikes in the woods. He loves to drink from streams, and swim in the pond. So he may be exposed to the bacteria. Should I vaccinate or not? What do you guys think?
I wouldn't, unless the vaccine is better now than when I first researched it. There are hundreds of strains, from my understanding, and the vaccine does not cover the ones most commonly affecting our pets. Also, it is one of the "guiltier" vaccines as far as side effects and potentially serious vaccinosis symptoms. I always err on the side of "no" to vaccines though and am more comfortable with keeping my dogs' immune systems as strong as possible, and hopefully, should they acquire an acute illness, they will be able to fight it on their own. I worry about vaccines causing a low-grade, chronic version of what they're attempting to prevent.
It has been at least 2 years since I looked into this though, so do your homework.
I think I will skip this vaccination. I've been doing some reading and think the risks still outweigh the benefits. Thank you for your input! Wish me luck that the vet doesn't fight me on my decision.
I wish I hadn't, seriously!
I always suspected that was the one that started a long and painful road of skin outbreaks. He was only a year old then.
Subsequent yearly boosters of other recommended always had him feeling punk for a few days. While still recovering from yet another outbreak of hotspot, another yearly 3-1 was administered, and 6 weeks later, thrombocytopenia did him in at age 4 1/2.
Did not know the word vaccinosis then, only trusted what the vet told me. Fired her. Found another. I know better now.
My dog, my wallet, my decision or we walk.
