We have to use two baby gates one on top of another because Yote can hop over a regular height baby gate flat footed!!
Let me know what you find, I would be interest to know as well because it is a pain to have to take off the top gate every time we want to go into the kitchen!
The first thing that comes to mind is the rod iron gate that I have in my backyard. I've never heard of anyone having one indoors and I'm not sure if they come in sizes that would fit an indoor frame. It just seems like it would be perfect. I can think of a couple of cons though 1)the hallway? that it would swing out into would need to be wide enough for it to swing all the way open to latch onto the wall for the times that you didn't want it closed 2) if you're worried about looks it might not work. Just a thought - I have no experience with this.
jennifer, teagan hops them as well. i'm always like 'hey! hip dysplasia!!!' neb hasn't lived with them, but i imagine he would.
cathi, that's something i'm hoping to look at at home depot. online they just have short gates, which is annoying. but there should be more selection in-store.
i'm hoping to find a compromise between aesthetics and practicality. but i would really like to open the room up more.
If you know someone who welds, or if you have a welding shop nearby, you could check into having something made. I suppose the cost would depend on the material, but at least that way you could get exactly what you want.

Depends depends depends. You can get 48" walk through dog gates that do screw into the wall. I wouldn't do the door frame myself unless I was prepared to not have a door on the hinges.
How tall (in inches) are you wanting at this point?
Personally if Teagan is that determined not to be in the room I'd just crate him and save yourself the dry wall.
Teagan will be jump gates, and she'll unlatch things, but when she's out in the room with the door closed (child safety knobs) she's fine. She doesn't destroy anything in an effort to get out. Metal is an extra precaution in case of small animals going past when just the gates are shut.
Neb is also allowed out in the room when I can't supervise him in the whole house, he can be free in there. I like the openness and ability to see into the room that gates will have.

I would just go to a security company or home improvement place and get a iron security gate if you need almost 6 feet. We used to keep one outside of our gun room and it worked exceptionally well. Not sure on the cost for those. My parents had the same one in the house since something like 76' until 2000.
