During a building search if a dog does not do a Bark and Hold or Guard and Bark (when he finds the suspect) he will not be in his Fight Drive. If the dog engages the suspect without doing a Bark and Hold, will the dog most likely be in his Prey Drive when he engages the suspect, if he has not been trained in a Bark and Hold for Fight Drive? I guess my question is that the whole reason for a Bark and Hold or Guard and Bark, is for the dog to switch from his Hunt Drive into Fight Drive through the Bark and Hold. Is this correct?
Prey drive only comes into play when something is fleeing the dog. Only if the suspect is found by the dog and then runs away from the dog, assuming he doesn't have to go through the dog to escape, is this prey driven. If the suspect is cornered and has to go through the dog to escape, then from the dog's perspective it's fight/defense. The H&B for the PSD should manifest itself as a restraint behavior on the part of a dog that wants to open a can of whoop a$$, not a prey/play driven bark indication.
I don't know if you are LE, but IMO, if you're sending a dog into a building after someone, there should be no Hold & Bark. It's too dangerous for the dog.
Ok, I understand that when a dog is chasing something it's Prey Drive. I'm not an LE, but I train with a few and my Dad just retired as an LE.
As I understand it I like to train using the Bark and Hold because the dog is not barking out of a play driven bark indication, but as a "hey if you move were gonna fight" mode.
I believe if you train by using the Bark and Hold in a building, then the dog will be able to switch into his Fight Drive through the Bark and Hold.
So, if the dog is not trained by using a Bark and Hold when he is in his Hunt Drive (searching the building), does he switch into Fight Drive when he sees the perp?
