I debated whether post or not, but decided, if I do, that someone's dog may not have to go through what Hambone did.
You see, Hambone did not present with the typical signs of hypothyroidism and even though I knew something was wrong, I obviously wasn't a vet.
Fast forward a year and half later to my boy who lost weight, became violently startled at sharp or unexpected noises, had abnormally slow heart rate and respiration, and aggression toward me. He never got fat, never had the pot belly, didn't have hair loss, didn't lose his appetite, etc.
The only true signs that something was "hypothyroidic" (?) were his "tragic face" and lethargy.
So, listen to your gut. If you know something is wrong with your dog and he/she doesn't present the typical signs, insist on blood work anyway. I wish I had pushed more in the beginning and he wouldn't have had to be miserable and sick.
(PS...He is doing much better now on raw and meds)
