I was asked only once to see the rabies tag; at a state park in Vermont, where I wanted to go hiking. He does wear his flat collar with the tag on it, pretty much all the time. It's never come off; it DOES act like a bell though! Esp with itching!!
My vet has a great system. After my dog recieved his shots, I recieved a card in the mail much like a credit card but printed on it was all the shots and the expiration dates on it. I just have to show it to the authorities if they ask.
I keep the tag in a folder with all my other dog info.

My dogs don't wear any tags; they don't wear collars at home--I only put a collar on them if it's attached to a leash and we're going somewhere.

Mine with the exception of the two who work with me at work don't really wear rabies tags. I just paperclip them to the shot paperwork and throw them in the file. I have yet to have anyone ask me for proof but we're pretty rural out here.
That said follow your local laws. I have heard of more than one person having issues with police, animal control, or park service folks over where their dog's tags are. If you need a license in your area that's as good most of the time as proof of rabies (you can't get one usually without the other.)
