I have two puppies that I am fostering, they are both blind and deaf, though one of them may be able to see vague shapes out of one eye. They were born this way (the blue eye-white gene is Aussies) and I am wondering if anyone has any experience raising puppies with these disabilities. They are fairly good with theyre noses and problem solving abilities but there are certain things that pose a problem, although house training has been easy. Any one have any experience?
Connie has posted something about making trails and marking the corners of furniture with their own individual oil scents. I'll search for it, but hopefully she'll see the thread.
THey are actually not as difficult as one might think- potty training isnt hard because they recognize surface so its just getting them accustomed to which activities they usually do where if you get my meaning its just a lot of viligance. They are already excellent with their noses and kind find me accross the yard, and follow me by smelling my trail. They know when its time to eat by the smell as well. They respond to reprimands by a tap on the nose when their being naughty and know it (nothing more than basic doggy decency at this point). Oh and they will follow me by feel, I lay my finger or hand on the side of their head or neck and by keeping in touch with it, are already following me, as a sort of "come" or "follow" command...I think i can teach them obedience by leash directions, kind of like a horse with a "soft mouth" using the leash signal sit, down and turn. I can do this with Lady, so I think Ill try it with them.
just wanted to update this thread for future reference but Im still looking for other peoples experience!
