Hi, i'm raising a Doberman pup (3 months) who is seeming to lose his bladder uncontrollably. I'm crate training him as I learned it from Ed's 8 weeks to 8 months DVD. How ever, he seems to lose it without notice while laying on the floor in the living room, and often when he's in his crate. I don't live him in the crate for long periods of time other than at night, and then i take him out if he wakes up. I'm wondering what could be causing this problem, is this common with pups his age or could it be a medical issue i should have looked at for lot's of $$$. Thanks in advance for any help.
I would have him checked for a urinary tract infection if it seems to be a problem.
Ditto. Oscar, my 4 y/o male, just got over a UTI and it's really not a big deal - but you need to go to the vet to have it diagnosed, and get antibiotics prescribed. Bring a urine sample with you (in a clean airtight container). The vet may want to get a "sterile" sample on their own, if the dog is willing (this involves putting a syringe directly through the abdomen and into the bladder :eek but if the dog is resistant (mine was) you'll want to have the back-up sample you brought.
3 months old is still pretty young, and we can't know how successful your house-training is, but if the pup is frequently "wetting his bed" or urinating without noticing, and seems to be peeing more than his previous potty schedule, I'd suspect an infection and take him right in. Oscar also spent a fair amount of time licking himself and started drinking copious amounts of water, which the vet said were common indicator/symptoms of a UTI...
*The "$$" for the vet visit shouldn't be a big concern - if it IS a UTI, you MUST have a vet prescribe antibiotics to cure it, and you'll want to catch it sooner rather than later, as UTIs only spread and get worse. You'll pay for an exam, a urinalysis, and antibiotics - depending on your vet, probably between $150-$300.
