I have a very firey 5month old Mal when it comes to his rag, he runs full speed and hits that thing after a nice airborne flight. I have a puppy sleeve that I let him tug with, he goes crazy playing with it, at what point should I let him start hitting the sleeve on a decoy? His baby teeth are out, I understand to let his adult teeth develop but what age are others out there starting their pups on the sleeve?
Mine were about 6 months old when they first got the sleeve. I don't do it all the time, just want to have them introduced to the helper and the sleeve. I take it pretty easy on them at this stage. They go to the field a few times a month as I've done since they were 12 wks old. Reg. training will start next month.
I've been going to the field 1-2 times a week since my now 8 month old pup was 12 weeks. He's been exposed to the sleeve for about 2 1/2 months. His first sleeve was a softer puppy sleeve with a very good motivational trainer. He's up to about 5 mins time on the field now and absolutely loves it. Good TD/Helper work is the key to good puppy work.
Yes the helper has the sleeve and the dog gets worked up. He's only seen it a few times, but as soon as he gets out and sees him, he's pulling to go get him.
