I have a five month old male rottweiler. He is a really friendly dog, good around people and around other dogs. The one problem I am having with him is that when I let him off lead he starts to lunge at me and nips me on my sleeve, It appears to be playful, but the more i say "No" the more excitable he becomes and the more he lunges. He does start to growl also when i tell him "No".
I have tried the turning my back and ignoring him technique with no success. He's a great dog otherwise, but i need this nipped in the bud now, before he get older and larger! Any advice is very much appreciated.
I'll try the redirection thing on our walk tomorrow, i`ll take some toys along and see how we get on. He is a very determined boy when it comes to this. I just read the article Alyssa posted and my boy sounds just like the GSD mentioned by the lady Jennifer at the end of that article.
James: I am having the same problem with my 10 month old
GSD. I call it grabbing, you call it lunging. Same thing, and
yes the only thing that works for me is redirecting. As long
as I have a ball, squeek dumbell, or simply say " where's your
ball or go get your dumbell" I have not had a problem and she gets tired out chasing and retreiving, and I am not attacked
which can be a little scarry and intimidating so I know where
your comming from. Good luck

James, my 10 month old GSD mix has started this behavior, and I know from first-hand experience that it can be scary when a 90 pound dog starts jumping and growling. Thanks so much for asking the question. I redirected with a ball and throwing some treats while saying "Find It!". At one point this morning, the only thing that worked, albeit only for a short while, was to grab Tucker's collar and pick him off the ground. I really don't want to continue that line, but it's better than being bitten.
I, too, thought that if I gave him a treat I was rewarding the behavior. I should re-watch my Leerburg DVDs, me thinks.
