I just wanted to know people's opinion on this...Almost always sport/protection training begins at a young age for dogs. However, is it ever too old to sport/protection train a dog? What is the oldest dog you've ever seen started in this kind of training? Have you ever watched an adult dog learn protection training, and was this dog successful?
Emily, Best case scenario, you want to start young.... like 8 weeks young. All of this work done at a young age, should only be done in Prey drive.... (biting tugs, pants, puppy sleeve) as it's fun for the dog, and does not put stress on a young dog.
Once the dog gets older... depending on the breed, usually around 2 years old the dog can usually start defense training, if the dogs got the nerves for it.
Sorry, getting off topic.
Ok the reason it's started, is so that the dog has a good foundation at a young age.
I see no reason why an older dog can't start doing the work.... as long as the dog still has good drives, and is healthy.
The oldest dog I have seen start, was 8 year old.
I find whenever I work older dogs, because they have not had that foundation, much of there prey drive has not been fostered at a young age, and it's really hard to get those dogs pumped to bite and work. But it's totally possible.
I started Schutzhund with my Rott at 4. I think it's been a success because in the year and a 1/2 we've been training we have always progressed. I would also call it a success because of how much I've enjoyed the time and training we have done.
