When you've done an elimination diet for 2-3 months and you start adding back in the eliminated foods one-at-a-time...roughly how long does it take to see an allergic reaction, if the dog really does have a food allergy?
Would you see a reaction fairly quickly, like within days? Weeks?

Hi Sarah,
We did the elimination diet with Kasey and from what both the derma vet and the regular vet said, if a dog is truly allergic (not just sensitive) to a food, the dog will start having itching and usually rashes within 24 to 72 hours after eating the food. If you feed for one week and you see no difference, chances are they are not allergic to that food. We added one new food every week or so. It's not very often that a dog is food allergic - only 10% or less of the time. The derma vet said that if a dog allergic to food, they will often times have other symptoms too - such as vomiting, diarrhea, and other digestive problems.

It was always hard to tell with all the other stuff that was going on if he truly had a food allergy. Now that we've got his allergies well-managed and have a good idea of what normal is, it seemed like the perfect time to find out if food is a problem.
So far, 2 weeks on chicken has been good. Next up is turkey, and then lamb.

Tonight was True's first taste of lamb in 3 months and he just threw the whole meal up, exactly 2 hours after he was fed. We've gone through chicken and turkey with no problems and vomiting is not something he usually does.
Is it too early to jump to any conclusions? Should I give the lamb a few more days and see how it goes? Vomiting isn't the end of the earth except I hate seeing his allergy meds all over the floor.
