Just wondering if you can have too much omega's or salmon oil which might cause flaky skin.
Just started feeding a new food (orijen 6 fish) along with the grizzly salmon oil and my dogs are starting to have a little bit of flaky skin. Both food and salmon oil are new to them
Couple of my thoughts are the change in food and or getting used to the salmon oil.
Is this a possible cause or is it just because the weather has been so cold and dry in IL? Just wondering if anyone had any ideas?
I'm just going by what the directions are on the back of the container. 3 pumps for dogs 70lbs.
Can't tell if it was from food or weather. They were flaky before a little than it stopped and now has picked up again but we had some strange weather with up and down temps which I think contributed. They are not itchy nor does it seem to be bothering them.
Connie, you seem to answer all my questions...Thanks

Omega 3s are fatty acids, as are Omega 6s and 9s. They're the primary building blocks of lipids (kind of the way amino acids are the building blocks of proteins).
Lipids (fats), in the absence of an abnormality or disease, would be the opposite of a dry skin cause.

..... you can give 1000 mg of fish oil for every ten lbs. of the dog's weight.
Yes indeed. 1200 mg is a therapeutic dose for a 12-pound dog.
That's why most of us with big dogs use liquid rather than capsules. 8 capsules a day can be pretty spendy.
In addition, unless it's a reputable company (or you pierce, squeeze, and sniff), caps can disguise rancidity, which is worse than useless: rancid oils are potential carcinogens.
