Did you see enough to give a brief overview of training?
I know it can't be summed up in one post. Just vaguely.
I've really been throwing this around for Turbo and I.
The good, privately owned pet store that we go to has a team and offers training, too. They said my short dog, if he showed some promise, would be scooped up by any team with room.
Michael, you and Turbo would have a blast!
We just worked on restrained recalls, my son and the teacher held Huck back, then I took off sprinting and called out "HUCK COME" as I ran, then they released him and he'd come tearing up next to me and I marked and then he got his tug. We'd tug all the way back 50 or so feet and then do it all again--20 times or so and another session of this later.
We also trained on the box, a hurdle and the box, testing him out to confirm his natural turn. (he's a lefty! lol) and then I stood on the side, marking when he had all 4 on the box, and rewarded on the flip side of the hurdle.
Turns, recalls, send out, and of course catching that ball as it shoots out! (I'm sure there's more)
A big advantage to Huck is that he has already "learned how to learn" (I think :grin and he seems to want to do this, so... I'm glad a fellow club member mentioned this opportunity.
I was very impressed with his recall with other dogs around, as there were several dogs out on the sidelines. Very different from our schutzhund training (which I'm still doing with Huck) in that regard. He did great.
Are there big dogs doing flyball? Chula weighs in at 90 lbs, and I think she's pretty fast for a molosser type...but turning on a dime may not be her strong suit!
