I was at a local pet supplier and one of the staff mentioned that feeding raw meat diets to GSD puppies can cause too fast of growth because of the high protein levels which can lead to hip/elbow problems.
Has anyone heard of this?
I am planning to feed my new puppy raw food prepared by Urban Carnivore or similar.
I've also heard "your dog will get salmonella and die."
"Your dog will choke on a bone."
"Chicken bones will splinter and kill the dog (even when uncooked)"
"Your dog will develop blood lust and 'turn' on you."
Biologically, dogs are designed to consume raw meat.
No animal evolved to eat processed kibble. If they did, they would have become extinct long before the industrial revolution, when kibble was first produced.
Feeding a balanced, nutritionally correct raw diet is not going to harm your dog.
I've actually heard (and experienced ) the opposite. Raw fed puppies tend to grow slow and steady when compared to kibble fed pups, and don't seem experience the radical growth spurts that commercial diets can cause.

My experience with all four of my raw-fed dogs is that they have grown more slowly than their kibble-fed littermates. Case in point--Ellie, my Leonberger, at 13 months is 90 pounds. Her sister is 110.
My understanding is that it is calcium supplementation and extra calories that contribute to rapid bone growth---both of which I suppose are possible on either an incorrect raw or kibble diet. No matter what food you feed, keep pups lean and don't offer extra calcium.
However well-intentioned he may be, does the supplier you spoke with have a financial interest in steering you away from a raw diet?
