I have a 10 month GSD female on her 6th day of heat. I also have a 10 month unneutered mutt male who is howling and yapping his brains out already. My first time in this situation.
He does quiet if in crate with sheet over top, at this point anyway. I am keeping them separate at all times and if he is out, he is on lead with me, so as to avoid any accidents through the wire crate.
My question is when he is out, he is psycho and focused mainly on her. Is it fair to do ob with him during this time? At a trial, if there is a bitch in heat he will need to focus.
What do you do with your males? Short sessions. I can get some good ob at this point, but what are realistic expectations during this time? Everything feels outside the realm of "normal" right now.
My personal opinion is that a female in heat is a great distraction for obedience training, BUT 10 months is quite young and immature to be bringing this level of distraction into training.
Maybe by her next heat he (and she) will be up to having her in a crate while doing focus and OB at a distance with the male, and then vice versa. It helped a ton with my male when he was younger to realize that a girl in heat is not an excuse to be stupid. Took a couple of cycle…
In the meantime, lots of exercise for BOTH of them. Get them nice and worn out and you will prevent some of the stupidity.
Also, if you are going to do OB with your boy, take it to a room that she has little access to. Try to set him up for success. Just be patient.
Lynne, thanks for asking, as you know, post on her is up--Ava.
Thanks for the suggestions, in line with what I've been doing (alongside trying to be patient).
I suppose I could take advantage of this and train Huck to roll over...he's laying in front of her crate, rolling over and over back and forth...what, mark and click?
LMAO.
