i have a 2.5 gsd...in bite work he will hold the sleeve fine and out on command, but when i pull him into to me for me to hold him he outs...so i haven't pushed the issue of him coming into me for me to hold him...is is necessary for me to be able to hold him when he is doing fine without it...he runs around really proud and i just let him...he does go back into drive each time...
No, it isn't necessary. Altho the premature dropping of the sleeve can be fixed, if you're happy with the behaviors you are getting without it, don't sweat it.
No problem at all. Have the helper touch him or you trot and your dog carries the sleeve. We see here a glimpse of the dog being distracted from his work and drive to negotiate the handler/owner. I am not a big fan of the owner-playing tug with the sleeve if the dog is capable of getting good bites from a helper…let the helper play the tug-and-lose game.
While I would encourage you to train your dog off the field with a prey object like the ball to deal with your proximity and contact without loosing focus. Small quite retrieves where you play a short tug and lose game each day should fix this problem as long as you dot override it on the field by disregarding the advice to only let the helper work him with sleeve issues for a while.
Soon your dog will be fine with you and the helper close and touching and will be helpful later in your approach to bark and hold training.

A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. - Robert Benchley
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
