I feed chicken leg Qtrs also occasionally. I would not give these to young dogs that don't have the jaw strength to masticate leg bones. Some people are afraid to feed weight bearing bones, but I have never,so far, ever had any issues with feeding these. I will NOT feed turkey leg Qtrs or even wings. Just my choice on this. Pups are fed chicken necks & chicken wings & then later pork neck bones. Then eventually when older all except legs until MUCH older.
Not to even attempt to sway you from your decisions, thought I would give you food for thought...
I just fed my five month old Rott (about 65lbs) two leg quarters. This is the staple for my diet as they are usually available for $0.39 - $0.59 a pound for a ten pound bag. He has been eating them since he was 12 weeks.
Tonight for dinner, he will be getting a turkey drumstick (on sale, the whole 18lb turkey cost $5!!!!) while Quinn will be getting the other drumstick and thigh. My four pound kitty (she is such a little cutie!) will be eating a chicken thigh as well.
All of the dogs I have owned or fostered can USUALLY handle these bigger bones just fine. I understand doing what feels comfortable, but thought I would give you food for thought.
I make the choice to draw the line at the chicken leg qtrs. Weight bearing bones can be hard on teeth. JMO. I just want to minimize the risk on tooth fractures from large weight bearing bones. My dogs get a good variety of RMB
Sorry, my computer hickupped & posted the above before I had finished typing. What I was saying ...is that my dogs get a good variety of RMBs in their diets. I know that they CAN eat turkey legs, I just choose not to fed them to minimize the risk of tooth fractures. I also feed beef shin (marrow) bones but remove them shortly after they have eaten & enjoyed the marrow, 'cause I don't want them trying to chew on these bones either. Again, just my choices. I believe that as long as we meet the nutritional needs of our dogs, what ever else we feed is a matter of individual choice. Glad you kitty enjoys raw...my cat won't touch it! But then she is not the smartest of kitties :-(
