I adopted a Jack Russell Mix from the shelter about 6 months ago. He is probably about 2 1/2 years. He is dominant like most Jacks but also very obedient and wants to please. He has weak nerves and is soft unless in high prey drive mode. He fence fights with the Rottie/Lab mix next door but is fine with the Schnauzers on the other side of us. As I was at a loss as to what to do about the fence fighting I got the pack leader video off this site. Nothing I had tried seemed to work to stop it. That is when I started using the crate a lot more and keep him on the leach otherwise. No going outside unless I am with him and he is on the leash. He gets at least an hour walk in the morning and then sometimes more. Sometimes I walk him in the evening too. He also does some treadmill. He never has liked the crate but he was to the point that I could put him in there when I leave the house and he would be quite when I was gone. Now since using it more when I come home he has dug in it and is panicky. Even when he is in there by me when I am using the computer he will be quiet but he will pant and be very stressed. He will not eat in there either when he shuts down with panic. Any help on this would be appreciated. Sorry for such a long post but wanted to give background information.
Thanks
I'm curious about this, also. If you just put him in the crate and didn't "warm" him up to the idea (since he is an older dog and probably has never been confined in a crate before).
Does he go in the crate willingly? Do you put him in for "time out" or for punishment?
Maybe giving him something to chew on (a stuffed Kong or a favorite toy) to keep him occupied.
