I have an e-collar coming for my dog and just finished watching Ed's remote collar dvd. I was most interested in the recall work. Very interesting and I was wondering if the 'velcro' effect is long lasting? Personally I would love it if she stayed close to me off leash but I also don't want to discourage her from going and exploring. She always stays within sight of me and if I step out of sight she immediately comes to find me.
Teach her a release command like "Free" so that it will be clear to her when she can explore. Does she velcro to you when you correct her now? If not, she may not with the ecollar either.
Thanks I will try that. Hmm, in class I'd say she does. I haven't done any corrections when she's been at the park. I should start using my long line with her and see how she is with that and corrections with the prong, if she ignores my command.
Please be sensitive concerning the level that you set with the e-collar. Start with the level very low and slowly adjust the reostat,in a neutral environment, and watch for an ear flick, a blink, this is your working level. Finding the working level this way is most fair to the dog. Your dog's temperment will affect this level. Based on your dog's genetics, environment, drives and training, should determine when you raise and lower the level that you have set on the collar. Remember, as soon as you get your dog's attention, reduce the level. Go back to foundation training. I would suggest also purchasing the dvd on marker training and use the information in both dvds together.
Happy Training,
Roni
Hi thanks Roni. I've watched Ed's Dvd and checked out your site too. I plan on being very careful with the collar and I'm also working with a trainer. I've done quite a bit of clicker/marker training with her but will also add the Marker dvd to my list of must haves!
