I am new to this forum and hope I am in the right forum. I am looking for a trainer in Rhode Island who uses the methods indicated in how to train with a remote collar.
We have a shep/lab mix. She is four years old. She is a 'soft' dog but stubborn in that I can no longer get her to 'come' or 'sit' when at a park after play. I have a tritonic collar that I have not used yet.
You can also search on the internet for "NILIF", or see what your local library has for training books that address pack structure. Pretty much any training book that is more than a collection of tricks will address pack structure in one way or another, although methods vary greatly. I'm a proponent of methods that require a dog to work for privleges, aka Nothing In Life Is Free (NILIF).
I'm not against electric collars, but they are easy to misuse. They're great for extending existing training to off-lead work, or for physically disabled handlers that can not effectivly use a different corrective collar.
When you're getting all the behaviors you want on a long line, then move on to the electric collar. Ed has a DVD explaining how to use the collar:
