Cicero has been getting into the trash and I am having trouble stopping him. The trash is kept under the sink so it's not as if I have it sitting out there for him to get to. He used to be allowed in the kitchen if I was in there or if a toy found it's way in there he was allowed to go get it out. This was all before he started getting into the trash.
I saw on another thread that dogs don't understand why they are sometimes allowed in a room and not other times. Following that theory Cicero is no longer allowed in the kitchen. I enforce this by keeping him out when I am in there and if I see him going in/in there I make him get out. I am being consistent in that he is now never allowed in the kitchen.
It is a small kitchen and there is no good way to just put up a gate or block it off.
Any suggestions on how to keep him out of the kitchen and therefore out of the garbage?
It's under the sink and it's a small area so there is really no room for a lid. I feel like the fact that there is a cabinet door should be enough but he's crafty and quick!
How about a child-lock on the cabinet door? I've used the kind where the cabinet door opens a little bit, then you push down on the lock to release fully.
This doesn't answer your question about keeping him out of the kitchen, but it would keep him out of the trash.
I thought about those and really the only reason I want him out of the kitchen is to keep him out of the trash. The only thing that makes me hesitate with those is I think you have to screw them in and since I rent I feel like this is something I should avoid.
A scat mat would work well for this. It's a clear plastic mat you put on the floor and it zaps the dog's paws when he walks on it. (Feels like a static shock - yeah, i've tried it). I used mine for cats, but it is effective for dogs also.
If you have an e-collar you could use it, otherwise the old stand-by: leash when home and crate when out.

It's 2 small screws that go into the back of the cabinet. Not visible from the exterior of the cabinet when the lock is removed...
