What does everyone think of Barbara Woodhouse? Has anyone ever read any of her books, or even heard of her? She's not alive anymore, but when I was 10 or 11 I saw her train shelter dogs in basic obedience while she was on a Canadian tour. I was animal crazy as a kid and she blew me away with her demo. No nonsense dog training. One of her favourite lines..."I can train any dog in 5 minutes. It's training the owner that takes longer." I would appreciate anyone's opinion on the matter, good or bad. Brian Kilcommons apprenticed with her and his book "Good Owners, Great Dogs" was a great help in my early doggie days. Thanks a lot!!!
Hahaha! It's too bad she's no longer with us. I have a dog that I would challenge anyone to train in 5 weeks, much less 5 minutes. He's my problem child, but I've gotta love him anyway
Ed, it isn't so much speaking ill of the dead, as it is critiquing her work.
I admit it(cringe). I have Barbara Woodhouse on my shelf of dog books. While she did come off as a fruit loop sometimes, she did have a no nonsense approach to dog training. She also advocated the use of choke collars at a time when it was starting to become popular to condemn them as "cruel". I guess I better go "walkies" now so everyone can jump on this post and flame me to hell.
I also saw Barbara Woodhouse demonstrating her methods on more than one occasion and whilst I would not go over the hill about her,she did do a lot of good amongst pet owners in the UK.
People became hooked on her TV shows and many followed her and at least improved their pets behaviour.
I dont recall ever seeing her trying to do any advanced work.
She was not biased towards any method of training and at least was prepared to treat each dog as an individual.

Gosh..Barbara Woodhouse...haven't thought about her for years. I do have a book that she wrote "No Bad Dogs" and found it to be very easy to understand and apply at the time. I still have it..somewhere.
