Well, Lucy is settling down nicely in the family. Beagle mix.
But, her recall still isn't good. She just has to follow her nose right now.
If we are marker training, she will heel beside me, looking up at me so pretty its like we are in the ring. If she is far away (but still on her long lead) and I call her, she will shoot like a rocket to me and do a beautiful front sit.
My problem I am writing about is this:
She wanders away (with permission) and I call her to practice the "COME" command and she does...if she knows I have food.
She will also look up independently and the lightbulb goes on over her head (Almost literally) and she runs like a shot back to me and expects a reward. What do I do? I don't want to not reward, but is this the right way to do it -- when she initiates coming to me?
Sure you can reward her when she comes unbehest to you.
Just give her a command to follow for her reward. i.e. sit, down, rollover, play dead, jump through the hoop, kiss me, at ease-smokem if you've got them. Ya know, whatever you happen to be working on that day.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
